Salah Makes History as First African to Hit 50 Champions League Goals
Mohamed Salah has etched his name deeper into football history after becoming the first African player to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League.
The Liverpool F.C. forward reached the milestone during his side’s emphatic 4–0 victory over Galatasaray S.K. in the Round of 16 second-leg clash on Wednesday night.
Salah’s landmark goal came in the 62nd minute, as he curled a trademark strike into the top corner, sealing his place in history.
The Egyptian captain’s tally includes 47 goals for Liverpool, alongside previous contributions for FC Basel and AS Roma.
With this achievement, Salah surpasses the long-standing record of 44 goals set by Didier Drogba, the Chelsea F.C. legend widely regarded as one of Africa’s greatest footballers.
Salah will now look to extend his record when Liverpool face Paris Saint-Germain F.C. in the Champions League quarter-finals in April.
Opinion: Salah’s Legacy Is Now Undeniable
Mohamed Salah’s achievement is more than just a record—it is a statement about consistency, longevity, and excellence at the highest level. Breaking a record held by a figure like Didier Drogba is no small feat, considering Drogba’s iconic impact on the Champions League.
What makes Salah’s milestone even more impressive is the way he has maintained elite performance across different clubs and seasons. In an era of intense competition, reaching 50 goals in Europe’s toughest club competition speaks volumes about his quality.
Beyond statistics, Salah’s success continues to elevate African football on the global stage, inspiring a new generation of players.
At this point, debates about whether Salah is among Africa’s greatest players are becoming less relevant—he is not just among them, he is setting new standards.
