D’Tigers Slip in FIBA Rankings but Hold Top 10 Spot in Africa
Nigeria men's national basketball team have dropped to 53rd position in the latest rankings released by the International Basketball Federation.
The Nigerian men’s basketball team were previously ranked 50th in the world but have now slipped three places in the updated standings. Despite the drop globally, D’Tigers managed to retain their eighth position among African nations.
In Africa, South Sudan men's national basketball team currently lead the continent, followed by Angola men's national basketball team, Ivory Coast men's national basketball team, Egypt men's national basketball team, Senegal men's national basketball team, Cape Verde men's national basketball team and Tunisia men's national basketball team.
Cameroon men's national basketball team and Mali men's national basketball team complete the continent’s top ten rankings behind Nigeria.
Globally, United States men's national basketball team maintained their dominance by holding on to the number one position in the world rankings.
Opinion: A Warning Sign for Nigerian Basketball
While the drop in global ranking may appear small, it raises questions about the consistency and development of Nigerian basketball in recent years. D’Tigers were once seen as one of Africa’s most exciting teams, especially after their impressive performances at major international competitions.
However, administrative issues, inconsistent participation in international tournaments, and limited preparation time have sometimes affected the team’s progress.
The good news is that Nigeria still remains among Africa’s top basketball nations. But staying eighth on the continent should not be the long-term ambition for a country with Nigeria’s talent pool.
If the right structures, grassroots development, and stable leadership are put in place, D’Tigers have the potential to climb the rankings again and re-establish themselves as a true powerhouse in African basketball.
