Arteta Explains Rice, Zubimendi Absence as Arsenal Rotate Squad for FA Cup Clash

Arteta Explains Rice, Zubimendi Absence as Arsenal Rotate Squad for FA Cup Clash

Mikel Arteta has explained why midfielders Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi were left out of the squad for Arsenal F.C.’s FA Cup fifth-round clash against Mansfield Town F.C. on Saturday.

Both players were absent from the matchday squad as Arteta opted for heavy rotation, making nine changes to the side that secured a 1-0 Premier League victory over Brighton & Hove Albion F.C. earlier in the week.

Only Gabriel Martinelli and Cristhian Mosquera retained their places in the starting lineup from the previous match. The Spanish manager also handed opportunities to young talents Max Dowman and Marli Salmon, both of whom were included in the starting XI.

Speaking ahead of the game, Arteta emphasized the importance of taking the tie seriously despite the changes to his lineup.

“We know the difficulty of the challenge. It’s always really tough to win and earn the right to go through to the next round and we are very, very aware of that,” he said.

The match forms part of the fifth round of the FA Cup, a competition where surprises are common and underdog teams often rise to the occasion.

Opinion: Rotation Is Smart, But Arsenal Must Avoid Complacency

Arteta’s decision to rotate the squad is understandable given Arsenal’s busy schedule and their ongoing commitments in the Premier League. Resting key players like Rice and Zubimendi helps prevent fatigue and keeps the squad fresh for more demanding fixtures ahead.

However, heavy rotation in cup competitions can be risky. The FA Cup has a long history of shocking upsets, especially when top-flight teams underestimate lower-league opponents.

While giving opportunities to young players such as Dowman and Salmon is a positive step for Arsenal’s future, the team must still maintain the intensity and professionalism expected at this level.

If Arsenal approach the match with the right mindset, the rotation could prove beneficial. But if complacency creeps in, Mansfield Town could see it as the perfect opportunity to write their own FA Cup fairytale. ⚽
