“Men Are Scared of Confident Women” — Phyna Speaks on Being Single
Former Big Brother Naija winner, Phyna, has stirred conversations online after sharing her thoughts on why she is still single.
Speaking during a recent livestream on Twitch, the reality star suggested that many Nigerian men are intimidated by bold, confident, and independent women. According to her, such traits often make men uncomfortable, especially when they feel they cannot “control” the woman.
Phyna explained that outspoken women like herself are often judged prematurely based on their social media presence, with many men forming assumptions without even getting to know them personally.
“I am a ten over ten. The thing is just that men are scared of bold and confident women… Nigerian men like women that they can control,” she said.
Despite the perception, the actress maintained that she is unbothered and unwilling to change her personality or values to fit into societal or relationship expectations.
Her remarks have since sparked mixed reactions online, with some supporting her stance while others argue that confidence alone may not be the only factor influencing relationship choices.
🧠 Opinion: Confidence or Compatibility? The Real Conversation
Phyna’s statement taps into a recurring debate in modern relationships—are men truly intimidated by confident women, or is the issue more complex than that?
There’s some truth in what she says. Traditional expectations in many societies, including Nigeria, have long favored women who are more reserved, making bold and outspoken personalities seem “too much” for some people.
However, reducing the issue solely to fear of confident women may oversimplify things. Relationships are built on compatibility, emotional intelligence, communication, and shared values—not just confidence or independence.
Confidence is attractive, but how it is expressed matters. Being bold doesn’t automatically guarantee healthy relationships, just as being reserved doesn’t mean someone is easy to control.
At the same time, Phyna’s refusal to change herself is a strong statement of self-worth. The real challenge lies in finding partners who appreciate authenticity rather than trying to reshape it.
In the end, it’s less about men being “scared” and more about people finding the right balance between personality, respect, and mutual understanding.
