Former Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou has come to the defense of Ademola Lookman following his subdued performance in Atletico Madrid’s 2-0 victory over FC Barcelona in their UEFA Champions League quarter-final first leg.

Lookman, who recently joined Atletico from Atalanta during the winter transfer window, struggled to make his usual attacking impact and was substituted in the second half for Alexander Sørloth, who later scored the second goal.

The Spanish side had taken the lead earlier through a stunning free-kick from Julián Álvarez, putting them in a strong position ahead of the second leg.

Speaking after the match, Kalou attributed Lookman’s quiet outing to tactical instructions, explaining that the Nigerian forward was deployed in a more defensive role.

“He had to focus more on defense than on attacking… his strength lies in advancing forward,” Kalou said.
