Delta Aide Defends Pastor Jerry Eze Amid Backlash Over Alex Ekubo’s Death

Ossai Success, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Delta State Governor, has condemned the wave of online mockery directed at Pastor Jerry Eze following the death of Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo.

The criticism intensified after an old photo of Pastor Jerry Eze praying for the late actor resurfaced online shortly after news broke that Alex Ekubo had died after battling cancer. Some social media users used the image to question the pastor’s spiritual claims, mocking him for allegedly failing to heal the actor despite praying for him.

Reacting to the controversy, Ossai Success took to his official Facebook page to express disappointment over the attacks. He argued that the fact that prayers were offered for someone does not guarantee that death cannot occur, emphasizing that faith and divine healing should not be reduced to online ridicule.

According to him, God still performs miracles and healing, but outcomes remain subject to divine will. He cautioned critics against mocking matters of faith, stressing that Alex Ekubo’s death should not be used to discredit prayer or spiritual intervention.

The debate has continued to divide opinions online, with some defending Pastor Jerry Eze and others questioning the role of public miracle narratives when high-profile cases end tragically.

Opinion: Faith, Grief, and Social Media Often Create a Volatile Mix

The backlash against Pastor Jerry Eze reveals how quickly grief can become public controversy in the age of social media. What began as mourning for Alex Ekubo soon shifted into a debate about religion, miracles, and public expectations of spiritual leaders.

At the center of the issue is a misunderstanding many people have about prayer and faith. For believers, prayer is often an act of support, hope, and surrender — not a guaranteed medical outcome. Yet when a public figure known for prayer is linked to a tragic death, critics often treat it as a failed promise, even if no such promise was explicitly made.

This incident also shows how online culture can strip sensitive situations of compassion. The death of a person becomes secondary to creating viral jokes, arguments, or criticism. That can be particularly painful for grieving families and close friends.

Whether one agrees with Pastor Jerry Eze’s ministry or not, mocking a prayer offered for someone battling a terminal illness raises deeper questions about empathy in digital spaces.

Ultimately, the conversation is not only about religion. It is about how society responds to loss, and whether public discourse still leaves room for respect when tragedy unfolds in the spotlight.
