Unity Cup: Eric Chelle Sends Strong Message to NPFL Players After Zimbabwe Victory

Unity Cup: Eric Chelle Sends Strong Message to NPFL Players After Zimbabwe Victory

Éric Chelle has delivered an important message to Nigeria’s home-based players following the Super Eagles’ 2-0 victory over Zimbabwe in the Unity Cup semi-final on Tuesday night.

Nigeria secured the win at The Valley in London thanks to a brilliant brace from Femi Azeez, continuing Chelle’s promising start with the national team.

The Malian coach had included several Nigeria Premier Football League players in his squad for the tournament, including Michael Atata, Aderemi Adeoye, Tosin Oyedokun, Chibueze Oputa, Obinna Igbokwe, and Elias Ochobi.

Speaking after the match, Chelle admitted that the home-based players still need time to fully adapt and become part of his long-term plans for the Super Eagles.

According to him, the pressure of playing in Europe and representing Nigeria at senior international level may have affected some of the players, especially those experiencing such an environment for the first time.

“I need some time to work with them and make them part of the small project,” Chelle said.

He added that despite the challenges, he was pleased with the effort and performances shown by the NPFL stars against Zimbabwe.

The coach’s comments suggest that while immediate integration into the core squad may not happen quickly, the door remains open for domestic league players to earn a bigger role in the national team setup.

Opinion: Chelle’s Approach Could Finally Rebuild Trust in Home-Based Talent

For years, Nigerian football fans have debated whether NPFL players are truly given fair opportunities in the Super Eagles.

What makes Éric Chelle’s comments refreshing is that he appears realistic rather than dismissive. Instead of pretending the transition is easy, he openly acknowledged the pressure and adjustment required for domestic players stepping onto the international stage.

That honesty matters.

The gap between local league football and elite international football is significant — not necessarily because NPFL players lack talent, but because exposure, tactical demands, and playing environments are completely different.

Still, tournaments like the Unity Cup are valuable because they allow coaches to evaluate hunger, mentality, and adaptability, not just reputation. Players like Chibueze Oputa and Obinna Igbokwe gaining experience in this environment could become important for Nigerian football long term.

Another positive sign is that Chelle does not seem interested in selecting players only based on where they play. Instead, he appears focused on development and integration, which could help rebuild confidence in home-based football.

Ultimately, if managed properly, this approach may finally create a more balanced pathway between the NPFL and the Super Eagles — something Nigerian football has struggled to achieve consistently for years.
