Brymo Backs Igbo Presidency, Says Nigeria Must Move Beyond Past Divisions
Nigerian singer Olawale Oloforo, popularly known as Brymo, has said the time has come for Nigeria to begin considering the possibility of an Igbo president, urging citizens to move beyond historical tensions and embrace national reconciliation.
The singer, who faced criticism during the 2023 presidential election campaign over comments perceived as opposing an Igbo presidency, said the country must be willing to let go of past disagreements and work towards unity.
Speaking during a recent interview on Yanga FM Lagos, Brymo said an Igbo presidency would represent a step toward inclusion and reconciliation but expressed concerns that insecurity in the South-east could affect the political conversation.
“I think it is high time for Igbo presidency. It is time for Nigeria to start considering Igbo presidency. Let’s let go of the past and reconcile our differences and unite as a nation,” he said.
However, he argued that insecurity has become a major challenge, claiming that some groups across Nigeria have used security concerns as part of political struggles.
Brymo also praised President Bola Tinubu, saying he believes the president prevented the South-west security outfit, Amotekun, from becoming a force that could fuel separatist tendencies.
“One of the reasons I like President Bola Tinubu is because he stopped Amotekun from taking off. He didn’t support it,” he said.
His comments have sparked fresh discussions online, with some Nigerians applauding his call for inclusiveness, while others questioned his views on insecurity and the connection he drew between security challenges and political ambitions.
The debate once again highlights the long-running conversation around regional balance, representation and the possibility of an Igbo president leading Nigeria in the future.
