Cafu Names Messi, Pele, Maradona and Ronaldinho as Football’s Greatest Ever Players, Leaves Out Ronaldo
Brazilian football icon Cafu has sparked debate among football fans after leaving out Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo from his list of the greatest players in football history.
The former Brazil captain made the comments during an interview with Spanish newspaper El Mundo, where he praised the impact of football legends who have transformed the game across generations.
Cafu named Lionel Messi, Ronaldinho, Diego Maradona and Pelé as the four greatest players ever, describing them as football artists who changed the sport forever.
“Maradona is the embodiment of football art, as are Messi, Pele, and Ronaldinho. When I see those unique and brilliant players, I really enjoy it,” Cafu said.
“In my opinion, these four players are on par and are the four greatest players in history. These four players truly changed the sport and are still changing it today.”
Cafu’s selection has naturally reignited one of football’s biggest debates: where does Ronaldo rank among the all-time greats? The Portuguese superstar’s supporters will point to his record-breaking goalscoring numbers, Champions League success, international achievements and remarkable longevity.
However, Cafu’s opinion appears to focus less on statistics and more on influence, creativity and the ability to redefine how football is played. While Ronaldo has built a career based on incredible discipline, athleticism and consistency, players like Messi, Maradona, Pele and Ronaldinho are often remembered for bringing a unique artistic quality to the game.
The omission of Ronaldo will likely continue to divide opinion, but it also highlights the difficulty of comparing legends from different eras. Football history is filled with players who dominated in different ways — some through numbers, others through magic moments that changed how fans viewed the sport.
