Carter Efe Faces Backlash as Babcock University Denies Viral Certificate, Threatens Legal Action
Nigerian skit maker and content creator Oderohiwo Joseph Efe, popularly known as Carter Efe, has found himself at the centre of controversy after Babcock University distanced itself from a viral certificate allegedly linked to him.
The controversy began after Carter Efe claimed during a livestream that the private university had awarded him an honorary certificate, following discussions around rapper Ycee’s comments about the rise of online personalities.
However, Babcock University released an official statement denying any connection to the document circulating online, describing it as fraudulent.
The institution stated that it does not issue honorary certificates based on undergraduate academic performance and clarified that it does not have a degree classification known as “First Class Upper,” explaining that its highest academic recognition is First Class Honours.
The university also advised the public, employers, and organisations to verify academic credentials through the Office of the Registrar, while warning that appropriate legal action could be taken.
The development has generated mixed reactions online, with some social media users accusing Carter Efe of damaging the university’s reputation, while others questioned the authenticity of the document and asked for more details about how it surfaced.
Opinion:
The situation highlights how quickly online fame can create controversies in the digital age. Content creators often use humour, exaggeration, and viral moments to entertain audiences, but issues involving institutions, academic claims, or public records require more caution.
A viral moment may bring attention, but credibility is one of the most valuable assets a public figure can have. For influencers and entertainers, verifying information before sharing it can help prevent unnecessary conflicts and protect their reputation.
