Chelsea Begin Talks For Rayo Vallecano Defender Pep Chavarria After Cucurella Exit
Chelsea have opened discussions with Spanish club Rayo Vallecano over a possible move for left-back Pep Chavarria as the Blues look to strengthen their defensive options.
The Premier League giants are searching for a new option on the left side of defence following Marc Cucurella’s £52 million transfer to Real Madrid, which has left manager Xabi Alonso with fewer choices in that position.
According to reports from Football London, Chelsea have started club-to-club negotiations with Rayo Vallecano for the 28-year-old defender, who still has four years remaining on his contract.
Chavarria enjoyed an impressive campaign last season, making 44 appearances across all competitions and helping Rayo reach the Conference League final while finishing eighth in La Liga. His ability to operate as both a left-back and wing-back has reportedly attracted Chelsea’s interest.
The Blues already have Dutch defender Jorrel Hato, who joined from Ajax for £37 million last summer, as an option in the position. After a difficult adjustment period, Hato improved significantly during the second half of his debut season and impressed Chelsea’s hierarchy.
However, bringing in Chavarria would provide more competition and experience as Alonso continues to reshape the squad.
Chelsea’s move for Chavarria comes as part of a new era under Alonso, with the club also close to completing the arrival of Marco Palestra from Atalanta. The Spanish defender could become the second major addition of Alonso’s tenure, excluding deals agreed before his appointment.
Chavarria may not arrive with the same reputation as some of Chelsea’s recent signings, but his consistency, versatility and experience in European competition could make him a practical addition for a team looking to build depth across a long season.
