Andy Townsend Urges Liam Delap to Leave Chelsea for Everton
Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend has advised young striker Liam Delap to leave Chelsea FC and pursue a move to Everton FC in search of regular first-team football.
Townsend believes Delap has struggled to adapt since arriving at Stamford Bridge from Ipswich Town and has yet to show the qualities that made him one of England's most promising young forwards.
Speaking to OLBG, the former midfielder suggested that Delap appears uncomfortable within Chelsea's system and would benefit from joining a club where he can play consistently and become the focal point of the attack.
“Everton are desperate for a striker,” Townsend said.
“Liam at Chelsea, when compared to Ipswich, he’s always looked a little inhibited. Is it the way the team plays, or is it just being a higher-profile player now at a bigger club? I just haven’t seen anything from him yet, to be honest.”
Townsend acknowledged that many talented strikers have struggled after making high-profile transfers, citing former Chelsea and Liverpool star Fernando Torres as an example.
He argued that Delap's development depends on regular playing time rather than spending extended periods on the bench.
“If I were him, I would be pushing to get away from Chelsea because if he’s not gonna play, you can only sit on a bench for so long before too much of your game starts to disappear,” Townsend added.
The former midfielder also believes Everton's style of play and passionate fan base could be the ideal environment for Delap to rebuild confidence and rediscover his goal-scoring form.
“And if he goes in there and starts bashing in a few goals and starts looking aggressive, they will love him there.”
Townsend's comments come amid wider discussions about Chelsea's squad, with the former player recently suggesting that new manager Xabi Alonso should consider replacing goalkeeper Robert Sánchez as part of the club's rebuilding process.
Opinion: Delap Needs Minutes More Than Potential
Andy Townsend's criticism may sound harsh, but it highlights a reality many young footballers face when joining elite clubs too early.
Liam Delap's move from Ipswich to Chelsea offered prestige and opportunity, but it also brought greater competition, higher expectations, and reduced playing time. For a young striker still developing his game, those factors can significantly impact confidence and progress.
The comparison between Delap's performances at Ipswich and Chelsea is telling. At Ipswich, he played with freedom and confidence because he was trusted as a key figure. At Chelsea, he has often looked like a player trying not to make mistakes rather than one eager to impose himself on matches.
That does not necessarily mean he lacks quality. Many top forwards have endured difficult spells before finding the right environment to flourish. The challenge is ensuring that potential is not wasted through inactivity.
Everton could indeed be a sensible destination. The club has a history of embracing hardworking, physical strikers, and Delap's aggressive style could suit their approach. More importantly, he would likely receive the regular minutes needed to refine his game.
Chelsea, meanwhile, must decide whether they see Delap as part of their long-term plans. If opportunities remain limited, a loan move or permanent transfer could benefit all parties.
At this stage of his career, Delap's priority should not be the size of the club he represents but the amount of football he plays. Talent develops on the pitch, not on the bench. If he wants to fulfill his potential, consistent game time may be the most valuable transfer he can make this summer.
