Bruno Fernandes Hails Gonçalo Guedes’ Impact in Portugal’s Win Over Chile Ahead of World Cup

Bruno Fernandes Hails Gonçalo Guedes’ Impact in Portugal’s Win Over Chile Ahead of World Cup

Portugal captain for the second half, Bruno Fernandes, has praised teammate Gonçalo Guedes for his influential performance after coming off the bench in Portugal’s 2-1 victory over Chile in a pre-World Cup friendly.

The match, played at the Estadio Nacional, served as one of Portugal’s final preparations for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite dominating possession in the opening half, Roberto Martinez’s side struggled to convert their chances, with Cristiano Ronaldo and his teammates unable to find a breakthrough before the interval.

The game took a dramatic turn in first-half stoppage time when Portugal’s Rafael Leão and Chile defender Iván Román were both shown red cards following an altercation near the corner flag.

At the start of the second half, Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez made several substitutions, including replacing Ronaldo with Guedes.

The move proved decisive as Guedes quickly made his mark. The forward latched onto a precise through ball from Rúben Neves before calmly slotting home to give Portugal the lead.

Fernandes later doubled Portugal’s advantage, putting the match beyond Chile’s reach before Lucas Cepeda grabbed a late consolation goal for the South Americans.

Reflecting on the game, Fernandes highlighted the tactical differences between both halves and emphasized the unique qualities Guedes brings to the national team.

“I believe the first half was different, with both teams having eleven players. In the second half, with ten players on each side, we needed to exercise more patience,” Fernandes said.

“We had to elevate the tempo at the appropriate moments and refrain from hurrying things excessively.”

The Manchester United midfielder went on to praise Guedes' versatility and suggested the attacker could play an important role for Portugal at the World Cup.

“We didn’t have a traditional focal point up front, but we had Gonçalo Guedes, who brings different qualities to the team.

“That’s why I think calling him up could be very interesting, whether to play through the middle or out on the wing.”

Portugal will now turn their attention to their final pre-World Cup friendly against the Nigeria national football team before travelling to North America for the tournament.

Opinion: Guedes Could Be Portugal’s Secret Weapon at the World Cup

While much of the spotlight naturally falls on stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes, Portugal's victory over Chile highlighted the importance of squad depth heading into a major tournament.

Gonçalo Guedes may not be the first name many fans mention when discussing Portugal's attacking options, but his performance demonstrated why he remains a valuable asset. His ability to operate across multiple attacking positions gives Roberto Martinez tactical flexibility, especially in matches where Portugal need a different approach.

International tournaments are often decided by players who seize unexpected opportunities rather than by established stars alone. Guedes' pace, movement, and directness offer something different from Portugal's traditional attacking setup, making him a useful option against teams that defend deep or leave space in transition.

Bruno Fernandes' endorsement is particularly significant because it comes from a player who understands the demands of elite football. His comments suggest that Guedes is viewed as more than just a squad player—he is someone capable of influencing important matches.

As Portugal prepare for another World Cup challenge, having players who can come off the bench and immediately change the game could prove crucial. If Guedes continues to deliver performances like the one against Chile, he may emerge as one of Portugal's most important unsung heroes during the tournament.

With a final test against Nigeria approaching, Martinez will be encouraged by the growing competition for places within his squad—a problem every manager would gladly welcome before football's biggest stage.
