World Cup 2026: Michael Owen Predicts England Will Fall Short in Final
Former England striker Michael Owen believes the Three Lions have what it takes to reach the final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup but has predicted they will ultimately fall short against either France or Spain.
Speaking ahead of England's highly anticipated semi-final clash with defending champions Argentina, Owen expressed confidence in Thomas Tuchel's side but admitted that Europe's two football powerhouses currently possess stronger squads.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward said England have a realistic chance of overcoming Argentina to secure a place in the final, but expects either France or Spain to prove too strong if they make it that far.
"I think as an English fan, we can definitely get to the final," Owen told Metro UK.
"I think we'd have more chance against Spain than France. But both of those teams would be favourites against us."
Owen added that while his emotions are backing England to lift the trophy, his football judgment tells him otherwise.
"I'm thinking we are going to get to the final and we are going to lose in the final. That is how I sort of see it.
"Of course, my heart says England, but my head says France are better than us; Spain are probably better than us."
England face a stern test against Lionel Messi's Argentina in the semi-finals, while France and Spain will battle for the other place in the World Cup final.
Opinion:
Michael Owen's assessment reflects the fine margins at the highest level of international football. England have shown resilience and quality throughout the tournament, but France and Spain have arguably displayed greater consistency and attacking fluency. Should England overcome Argentina, they would still face an enormous challenge in the final. However, knockout football often defies predictions, and if the Three Lions can maintain their momentum, they have every reason to believe they can upset the odds and compete for the biggest prize in world football.
