Timi Dakolo Denies Debt Allegation, Responds to DJ Timmy Through Lawyer
Nigerian singer Timi Dakolo has formally responded to allegations made by disc jockey DJ Timmy, who recently accused him of owing money and threatened to expose details about his private life.
Earlier, DJ Timmy had taken to social media to accuse the singer of failing to settle an alleged debt. He also warned Dakolo to prepare to explain his alleged "sexcapades" and other personal matters to his wife and the public.
In response, Dakolo issued an official statement through his legal representatives, dismissing the allegations as false, defamatory and misleading.
According to the statement, the claims of unpaid debt are unfounded. The singer's legal team explained that the disputed amount relates to expenses connected with a proposed project, including venue arrangements, graphic design, domain registration, website fees, video editing, video deposits and consultation services.
Dakolo's lawyers maintained that the allegations damage the singer's reputation and indicated that appropriate legal steps would be taken to address the matter.
The dispute has generated significant reactions on social media, with many awaiting further clarification from both parties.
The development adds to a growing list of public disagreements within Nigeria's entertainment industry involving royalties, contractual obligations and financial claims.
In recent years, several artistes have publicly accused colleagues or collaborators of unpaid royalties and contractual breaches. Among them are Laycon, who demanded royalties from DJ Neptune over their "Nobody" remix; Harrysong, who accused Kcee of withholding royalties and unreleased songs; and music producer Napji, who alleged he was not fully compensated for his work on several of Davido's songs.
Opinion
Financial disputes in the entertainment industry are not uncommon, but they are best resolved with evidence and through appropriate legal channels rather than social media. Public accusations—especially those involving unverified personal allegations—can quickly damage reputations and escalate conflicts unnecessarily.
Timi Dakolo's decision to respond through his legal team reflects a more formal approach to addressing the claims. Ultimately, the facts surrounding the alleged debt can only be established through documentation or legal proceedings, not through online exchanges.
