Adebayo Salami Reflects on Humble Beginnings in Theatre
Veteran Nollywood actor Adebayo Salami has reflected on the early days of his acting career, saying his generation entered the theatre industry out of passion rather than the pursuit of fame or wealth.
Sharing a throwback photo of himself alongside veteran actor Baba Wande on social media, the actor, popularly known as Oga Bello, wrote:
"When we started theatre, our minds and hearts were more about passion for the arts. Every other goodness that came from it was just a divine bonus for us."
The post highlights the dedication of pioneers who helped shape Nigeria's theatre and film industry long before Nollywood became a global brand.
In recent months, Salami has often reflected on his remarkable journey. He previously shared an old photograph with colleagues while celebrating more than five decades in the entertainment industry, expressing gratitude to God and remarking that actors never truly retire—they only get tired.
The screen legend has also spoken openly about his health, revealing that he has lived with hypertension for over 40 years and has accepted the health challenges that come with ageing while praying for continued strength and good health.
Earlier this year, his son, Femi Adebayo, expressed gratitude after prominent dignitaries attended the premiere of his father's film. During the celebration of Adebayo Salami's 60 years in the entertainment industry, actress Sola Sobowale paid tribute to him, crediting him for playing a major role in her career and describing him as a generous mentor and man of substance.
Salami has also been honoured alongside fellow veterans Jide Kosoko and Patience Ozokwo with honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of their outstanding contributions to Nigeria's entertainment industry.
His latest reflection serves as a reminder that for many of Nollywood's pioneers, passion for storytelling came first, while recognition and success followed as rewards for years of dedication.
