Bob Manuel Udokwu Reflects on Mr Ibu’s Death, Says Social Media Misjudged Nollywood’s Struggles
Veteran Nollywood actor Bob Manuel Udokwu has opened up about the late John Okafor, sharing his pain over the actor’s final days while speaking on the financial realities many entertainers face.
In a recent interview, Bob Manuel argued that life often places heavier financial responsibilities on men, stressing that the issue is not necessarily about how much actors earn but the obligations they are expected to shoulder.
Reflecting on Mr Ibu’s illness, the actor recalled the criticism he and other colleagues received while trying to raise funds for the comic legend’s medical treatment.
According to him, many social media users misunderstood the realities of the entertainment industry and unfairly judged those who appealed for public support.
Bob Manuel also admitted he was surprised to learn after Mr Ibu’s death that the late actor had more than one wife.
His comments come amid the lingering family dispute over Mr Ibu’s estate.
Veteran actress Rita Edochie recently condemned polygamy, describing it as one of the greatest causes of family conflict. She said the public disagreements over the late actor’s properties had been painful to witness.
Meanwhile, Mr Ibu’s widow, Stella, recently revealed that she and her children are facing financial hardship, claiming they now fetch water from a well and have struggled to pay rent and electricity bills.
The situation has been further complicated by accusations from one of Mr Ibu’s sons from a previous relationship, who alleged that Stella took control of the late actor’s assets and mismanaged funds donated during his illness.
Stella has denied the allegations, insisting that proceeds from the sale of one of the actor’s properties were used to cover funeral expenses and that she consulted family members before making the decision.
Opinion
Bob Manuel Udokwu’s remarks highlight two uncomfortable conversations that often emerge after the death of public figures: the financial vulnerability of entertainers and the complications that can arise when estate planning is unclear.
The emotional debates surrounding Mr Ibu’s legacy have shifted attention away from celebrating his remarkable contributions to Nigerian cinema. Regardless of the differing accounts from family members, the situation underscores the importance of transparent estate planning, open family communication and legal documentation—especially in blended or polygamous families.
For many observers, the biggest lesson is that fame does not always guarantee financial security, and unresolved family matters can quickly overshadow a lifetime of achievements.
