Black Market Is Trying To Fill Tafawa Balewa Square With 50,000 People Tonight

Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos is being turned into one enormous open-air cinema today for the premiere of Black Market, Damilola Osikoya's new film, in an attempt on a Guinness World Records title. Organisers are aiming for 50,000 guests. The record they are chasing stands at 43,624. Omowunmi Dada has spoken publicly about why the team is doing it.

The hard part is not the screen
Getting fifty thousand people into TBS is achievable in Lagos. Getting them in safely, counting them to Guinness standards, managing sound for a crowd that size and getting everybody home afterwards is the real test. The organisers' competence tonight will say as much about the state of Nigerian event production as the film will say about Nollywood.
A record attempt is a bet that the crowd itself becomes the story. In Lagos, that is usually a safe bet.

A record is a headline for a weekend. What decides whether Black Market was a clever launch or a stunt is its cinema run over the next month. The square will be packed tonight. The test is whether the multiplexes are next weekend.
