The former Premier League great George Baldock's family has confirmed his death.

They are in'shock' by the tragic demise of the former Sheffield United defender.

"We can confirm that George has sadly passed away," The family issued a brief statement (via Metro UK).

"As a family, we are shocked by this tragic loss. We kindly request that the media respect our privacy at this time."

Baldock was discovered lifeless in his swimming pool at home in Greece on Wednesday.

The 31-year-old departed English football to join Greek side Panathinaikos during the summer transfer window.
