Victor Gyökeres Delighted After Ending Goal Drought With Brace Against Atletico Madrid

Victor Gyökeres Delighted After Ending Goal Drought With Brace Against Atletico Madrid

Arsenal’s £64 million summer signing, Victor Gyökeres, has expressed delight after scoring twice in the Gunners’ emphatic 4–0 victory over Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Swedish forward, who had gone nine matches without a goal, produced a Player of the Match performance in North London, helping Mikel Arteta’s side tighten their grip on the group standings.

Brazilian duo Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhães also found the net as Arsenal’s dominance shone through, with all four goals coming in the second half.

Speaking to UEFA after the game, Gyökeres could not hide his joy at finally breaking his goal drought.

“I am very pleased. They had some good opportunities but I think we controlled it overall,” he said.

“To score four and keep a clean sheet again is very good. We always keep going. When we defend right and get chances, we’re extremely strong in taking them.

“Both my goals were great. I try to do my best all the time and work hard, contribute in different ways — the goals were going to come sooner or later.”

The 27-year-old striker also emphasized that Arsenal will remain focused and grounded as they continue their European journey.

“We want to do well and win football matches, but it’s a long journey. We’ll take it game by game — even if that sounds boring,” he added with a smile.

Arsenal will next face Slavia Prague on November 4 in their Champions League campaign, while Atletico Madrid will aim to bounce back against Union Saint-Gilloise. In domestic action, Arteta’s men face Crystal Palace, while Diego Simeone’s side visit Real Betis in La Liga.

💭 Opinion: Gyökeres Finally Arrives — Arsenal’s Patience Pays Off

For weeks, Arsenal fans had begun to whisper doubts about Victor Gyökeres. The goals had dried up, and questions were mounting over whether the Swedish striker could handle the pressure of Premier League and Champions League football. But on Tuesday night, those doubts were silenced.

Gyökeres didn’t just score — he announced himself. His movement, confidence, and composure in front of goal reminded everyone why Arsenal splashed £64 million for his signature. More importantly, his brace symbolized what Mikel Arteta has been preaching all season: trust the process.

Strikers often live and die by goals, but Gyökeres has consistently offered more — pressing, link-up play, and selfless runs that open space for others. Against Atletico, all those efforts finally paid off in the best way possible.

If this performance is a sign of what’s to come, Arsenal might have found the missing piece they’ve been craving since the Giroud days — a complete forward who can grind through tough spells and still deliver when it matters most.

For now, Arsenal fans can breathe easy: their new No. 9 is back, confident, and hungry — just in time for the crucial months ahead.
