AGN Confirms President-Elect Abubakar Yakubu’s Involvement in Tragic Lagos Accident
The former president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Emeka Rollas, has confirmed that the guild’s newly elected president, Abubakar Yakubu, was involved in a tragic car accident that claimed the life of a young child in Surulere, Lagos.
Earlier reports revealed that Yakubu was arrested on Tuesday night following the fatal auto crash. According to the statement released on Thursday, Rollas explained that Yakubu’s vehicle suffered a sudden mechanical brake failure, which led to an unexpected collision involving the child and the child’s mother.
Rollas stated that Yakubu immediately cooperated with law enforcement and emergency responders at the scene. The child’s mother, who sustained injuries, is currently receiving medical treatment.
He also disclosed that the AGN leadership has since visited the bereaved family to offer condolences, emotional support, and solidarity during the painful incident. He added that the matter has been resolved amicably in recognition that the tragedy was not caused by intentional wrongdoing.
The statement partly reads:
“The accident, resulting from an unexpected mechanical brake failure, unfortunately claimed the life of a child and injured the child’s mother.
Immediately following the incident, Mr. Yakubu cooperated fully with law enforcement and emergency responders.
The family has shown remarkable grace and humanity in their response, and we thank them for their understanding.”
Rollas noted that Yakubu is “hale and hearty but deeply shaken” and has expressed profound sorrow, offering prayers for the soul of the departed child and the full recovery of the injured mother.
The AGN appealed to the public for understanding, privacy, and restraint, urging members and stakeholders to avoid speculation and divisive commentary as all parties continue to process the tragedy.
Opinion: A Painful Reminder of Life’s Fragility — And the Need for Responsibility on Every Road
The tragic accident involving Abubakar Yakubu is a heartbreaking reminder that accidents can happen to anyone, regardless of status or preparation. Brake failure is one of the most terrifying scenarios for any driver, because in a split second, control is lost and disaster can unfold.
While no one is blaming Yakubu for intentional wrongdoing, the incident reopens important conversations about vehicle maintenance, road safety, and the unpredictable nature of life itself. A child’s life was lost — an unimaginable pain for any parent — yet the affected family has shown extraordinary grace in their response. That alone is deeply humbling.
Yakubu’s willingness to cooperate with authorities and face the situation head-on is commendable. But beyond this individual case, Nigeria must strengthen safety checks and ensure drivers regularly maintain their vehicles, especially those in public or official roles.
This tragedy should push society to prioritize safety, empathy, and responsible driving habits. It is also a moment for the entertainment community — and the public — to offer compassion rather than condemnation. Blame won’t bring back a child, but support can help families, victims, and even unintended offenders heal.
In the end, this incident is a painful reminder that life is fragile, and every moment on the road should be treated with care.
