From Bet Shop to Big Dreams: Fola Opens Up on His Humble Journey Into Music

From Bet Shop to Big Dreams: Fola Opens Up on His Humble Journey Into Music

Fast-rising Nigerian singer Fola has shared an inspiring story of resilience and determination, revealing that his journey to the music industry began far from the spotlight — inside his father’s betting shop.

In a recent interview, the singer spoke candidly about his early struggles, explaining that his love for music started in high school where he played in a band. However, financial limitations made it impossible for him to pursue music professionally at the time.

“I started making music in high school, not professionally. I had a band I was playing with,” he said.

After leaving school, reality hit hard. Fola revealed that he didn’t even own a phone and had to rely on a friend’s device to keep his dreams alive.

“It was difficult for me because I didn’t even have a phone. I was using my guy’s phone to do stuff,” he recalled.

With limited opportunities in Ibadan, Fola turned to honest work, managing and cashiering at his father’s small betting shop in a bid to raise money and support himself.

“I checked my environment and it wasn’t encouraging, so I started working at a bet shop owned by my dad,” he explained.

That phase of his life would later become the foundation for a life-changing decision — relocating to Lagos. The move proved pivotal, opening doors that would shape his musical future. In Lagos, Fola met the late Mohbad, whom he credits as a major influence and catalyst in his career.

“I met Mohbad. Mohbad did a lot of things for me,” he said.

Through Mohbad, Fola was introduced to Bella Shmurda, leading to a heartfelt, paperwork-free collaboration in 2022. Despite the disparity in their careers at the time, Bella agreed to work with him without expecting any financial reward.

“The gap was so much between us, but Bella did it anyway, even when he wasn’t going to make a dime out of it,” Fola added.

Reflecting on his journey, the singer expressed gratitude for how far he has come.

“I thank God for where we are today,” he said.

Opinion: Fola’s Story Is Proof That Dreams Thrive on Persistence, Not Privilege

Fola’s journey is a powerful reminder that talent alone is often not enough — perseverance, humility, and community matter just as much. From managing a betting shop to recording songs on borrowed phones, his story mirrors the struggles of many Nigerian youths chasing big dreams with limited resources.

His experience also highlights the quiet generosity within the music industry, particularly from figures like Mohbad and Bella Shmurda, who chose mentorship and support over profit. In an era where success is often portrayed as overnight, Fola’s rise shows that growth is usually slow, messy, and built on small acts of kindness.

Above all, his story resonates because it is real. It speaks to hope — that with faith, hard work, and the right people, even the most modest beginnings can lead to meaningful success.
