Giroud Advises Chelsea to Sign a Striker and Centre-Back in January

Giroud Advises Chelsea to Sign a Striker and Centre-Back in January

Former Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud has weighed in on his old club’s transfer plans, identifying two key positions he believes need urgent reinforcement in the January transfer window.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the French World Cup winner said Chelsea should prioritize signing a proven striker and an experienced centre-back to strengthen Enzo Maresca’s youthful squad.

“He needs a striker who is consistent. He needs to find a good player,” Giroud said.
“A player who will score goals every single week. He’s got so much talent in the room, but I think he may need more experience.

“The squad is very young. Maybe he needs, or he feels he needs, one or two more players. Maybe a centre-back and a No. 9.”

Giroud, however, was not dismissive of Chelsea’s current attacking options, expressing belief in young striker Liam Delap.

“But I do like Delap. If we give him some time, I think he can be the type of striker to do the job,” he added.

Chelsea currently sit fourth in the Premier League table and will look to maintain their strong league position when they face Newcastle United this weekend.

Opinion: Experience Could Be the Missing Piece

Giroud’s comments strike at the heart of Chelsea’s current reality. The talent in the squad is undeniable, but consistency—especially in front of goal—has often been the difference between genuine title contenders and top-four hopefuls.

A reliable No. 9 could transform Chelsea’s attacking play, turning promising performances into decisive victories. Similarly, an experienced centre-back would add leadership and composure to a young defence, particularly in high-pressure matches.

However, there is also a delicate balance to strike. Chelsea’s long-term project is built around youth, and overloading the squad with short-term fixes could disrupt that vision. The challenge for Maresca and the club’s hierarchy will be to find players who bring experience without stalling development.

As January approaches, Giroud’s advice feels timely. If Chelsea get their recruitment right, they could turn a solid season into a truly special one.
