Okpara Blames Loss of Concentration for Bayelsa United’s Defeat to Kwara United

Okpara Blames Loss of Concentration for Bayelsa United’s Defeat to Kwara United

Bayelsa United head coach Meremu Okpara has attributed his team’s 2–0 loss to Kwara United on Matchday 17 of the Nigeria Premier Football League to a lapse in concentration, particularly in the second half.

The Prosperity Boys were beaten at the Rashidi Yekini Mainbowl Stadium, Ilorin, with goals from Babatunde Bright and Ini Emmanuel sealing all three points for the hosts on Sunday.

Reflecting on the encounter, Okpara admitted that his side had a strong start but failed to maintain the same intensity after the break, allowing Kwara United to take control of the game.

“We started the game well. Worst would have been a draw as we had the first half; Kwara United had the second half where they got the goals,” Okpara said after the match.
“Kwara United played well to get the maximum points over Bayelsa United.”

The defeat leaves Bayelsa United 13th on the league table with 23 points from 18 matches, as they continue to search for consistency in their campaign. Their attention now shifts to a crucial home fixture against El-Kanemi Warriors in Yenagoa.

Opinion: Fine Margins Are Costing Bayelsa United

Okpara’s assessment highlights a recurring issue in league football — games are won and lost in moments of concentration. Bayelsa United showed promise in the first half, but at this level, dominance without goals often comes at a cost.

Kwara United deserve credit for their resilience and ability to punish mistakes, traits that separate mid-table teams from those pushing higher up the standings. For Bayelsa United, the challenge now is turning good spells into full 90-minute performances.

With a home game up next, the Prosperity Boys have an opportunity to respond. Sharper focus, especially after halftime, could be the difference between another frustrating afternoon and a much-needed boost up the table.
