Rooney Backs Declan Rice as England’s Future Captain After Kane
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has thrown his support behind Declan Rice as the ideal candidate to succeed Harry Kane as England captain when the Bayern Munich striker eventually retires from international football.
Speaking on his BBC show, Rooney praised the Arsenal midfielder’s leadership qualities, personality, and growing influence within the national team, describing him as the natural heir to Kane’s armband.
“For me, Declan is the one who’s probably waiting for Harry Kane to hang up his boots at some point,” Rooney said.
“He was absolutely incredible [against Everton]. He’s the right one to take over for me, because of his drive, his personality. Everyone seems to love him — who knows him, who’s close to him. He’s irreplaceable for England.”
Rice, 26, has become one of England’s most dependable performers in recent years, anchoring the midfield with authority while also contributing decisively at both club and international levels. His consistency for Arsenal and his calm presence in high-pressure matches have only strengthened his standing within the England setup.
Opinion: Rice Feels Like the Captain England Are Growing Into
Rooney’s endorsement feels less like speculation and more like recognition of what is already unfolding. Rice leads not with noise, but with example — discipline, intensity, and accountability. In a modern England squad packed with flair and attacking talent, that balance is priceless.
While Kane remains a respected and effective captain, succession planning matters, and Rice appears tailor-made for the role. He commands respect across the dressing room, connects well with younger players, and embodies the professionalism Gareth Southgate has tried to instill in the team.
If England are truly building for the future, Declan Rice wearing the armband one day would feel less like a change — and more like a seamless continuation of leadership.
