Chike Opens Up on Why He Stepped Back from Church: “Church Is Not for Me”

Chike Opens Up on Why He Stepped Back from Church: “Church Is Not for Me”

Nigerian music sensation Chike Ezekpeazu has revealed why he stopped attending church regularly, sharing personal experiences that made participating in services challenging.

In a candid interview with VJ Adams, Chike said that running into someone from his past during a church service triggered uncomfortable memories, leaving him feeling out of place. He admitted he stayed only briefly before deciding to step away.

“The person leading the praise and worship and I had history. I was having flashbacks, and I felt out of place. I stayed only a week before leaving,” Chike explained.

Despite stepping away from church rituals, the singer was quick to clarify that his faith in God remains unwavering. He recounted moments early in his career when he prayed for guidance while living in Primewater Gardens, and a disorienting experience shortly after releasing his first album when he accidentally consumed a strong edible, leaving him confused for days.

“It’s not because I don’t believe in God. I do. Church is not for me. There are things I enjoy that I wouldn’t be able to do there. What matters most is doing right by people. Being Christian doesn’t mean you have to live in a certain way. Doing good for others is what counts,” he said.

Opinion: Faith Beyond Four Walls

Chike’s revelations remind us that spirituality isn’t one-size-fits-all. While many equate being religious with attending services, faith often thrives in personal reflection and deeds rather than rituals alone.

His story underscores an important lesson: doing good and living with integrity can be just as powerful a testament to belief as any formal practice. In an era where appearances sometimes outweigh authenticity, Chike’s approach offers a refreshing perspective — that faith is deeply personal, and honoring it can take many forms beyond the pews.
