Maresca Admits Chelsea Is "Not the Same" as Trophy-Winning Teams of the Past

Maresca Admits Chelsea Is "Not the Same" as Trophy-Winning Teams of the Past

Chelsea manager, Enzo Maresca, has admitted that his current squad cannot yet be compared to the dominant Chelsea teams of the past that regularly lifted silverware.

Speaking ahead of Friday night’s clash against Brighton, Maresca stressed that while fan expectations are understandable, the club is in a rebuilding phase and not yet ready to compete on multiple fronts.

Chelsea, who were within touching distance of Premier League leaders Liverpool before Christmas, have since endured a worrying slump, picking up just nine points from their last eight games. This poor run has all but ended their title hopes, leaving the club battling for a Champions League spot instead.

Acknowledging the frustration among fans, Maresca said:

“They [the fans] are 100% fair and correct. I grew up watching Chelsea winning games and competitions, but this Chelsea is not the same as that one.”

He added that Chelsea are not yet equipped to compete in four competitions in one season, but the ultimate goal is to restore the club’s former glory.

Opinion: A Hard Truth, But Will Fans Be Patient?

Maresca’s honesty is refreshing, but will Chelsea fans accept this reality? For a club that has won the Premier League, Champions League, and domestic cups multiple times in the past two decades, the idea of a "transition season" might not sit well.

Chelsea’s massive spending under Todd Boehly has yet to translate into consistent success, and while Maresca is trying to steady the ship, questions remain:
🔹 How long will this rebuild take?
🔹 Will Chelsea’s impatient owners give Maresca the time he needs?
🔹 Can the squad deliver Champions League football next season?

With Brighton up next, a win is crucial to restore confidence—both in the team and in Maresca’s project. 💙⚽
