CAF Champions League Race: Finidi George Confident Rivers United Will Seal Spot on Final Day

CAF Champions League Race: Finidi George Confident Rivers United Will Seal Spot on Final Day

As the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season draws to a thrilling close, Rivers United head coach Finidi George has expressed full confidence that his side will clinch a CAF Champions League spot come the final whistle this weekend.

Currently sitting in second place with 61 points, Rivers United are in pole position ahead of Abia Warriors, who trail by just one point in third. With Remo Stars already crowned champions, the battle for the runner-up slot — and the final Champions League ticket — is set for a dramatic conclusion.

Final Day Fixtures:

  • Rivers United vs Nasarawa United (in Port Harcourt)

  • Abia Warriors vs Ikorodu City (in Lagos)

For Finidi, who took over as Rivers United’s technical adviser this season, the target is clear — win at home and the job is done.

“We are still in a good place,” Finidi told the club’s media team.
“We have our last home match, and if we win that one, we will get that second place.”

Opinion: It’s in Their Hands — No Excuses Now

This is where champions are made — in the pressure cooker of final-day football. Rivers United have a golden opportunity to control their own destiny, in front of their own fans, against a Nasarawa side already out of the continental picture.

Finidi George, a respected former Super Eagles winger, knows what it means to rise on the big stage. Now, as coach, he's instilling that same belief and urgency in his players. And rightly so — a slip-up now would not only cost them a Champions League berth but also hand the initiative to a hungry Abia Warriors side.

This isn’t just a match. It’s a defining moment for Rivers United — a chance to return to the continental stage and prove they belong among Africa’s elite.

Pride of Rivers fans, are you ready to roar this weekend?
Do you believe Finidi George will guide the team to second place?
