TikTok Star Murja Kunya Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison for Naira Abuse

TikTok Star Murja Kunya Sentenced to 6 Months in Prison for Naira Abuse

A Federal High Court in Kano has sentenced popular TikTok influencer Murja Kunya to six months imprisonment for abusing the Naira, in what many are calling a stern warning to social media personalities flaunting wealth irresponsibly.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction before Justice Simone Amobeda after Kunya pleaded guilty to a charge of violating the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act, which prohibits the abuse and defacing of the national currency.

Kunya’s offence involved spraying Naira notes in a hotel room at Tahir Guest Palace, a stunt she reportedly filmed for social media. Initially arrested in January 2025, the influencer was granted bail but later absconded, forcing the EFCC into weeks of intensive tracking and surveillance before her re-arrest on March 16, 2025.

She finally appeared before the court on May 20, where she pleaded guilty and was sentenced to six months in prison without an option of fine.

🗣️ Opinion: When Clout-Chasing Crosses the Line

Murja Kunya’s case is a sobering reminder that social media fame does not exempt anyone from the law. While entertainers and influencers thrive on viral moments, flaunting currency in a country grappling with inflation and economic instability isn't just insensitive — it’s illegal.

This sentence isn’t just about punishing one TikToker. It’s a loud message to the clout-chasing culture that seems to value shock over substance. Abuse of the Naira, especially in a country where the economy directly affects millions, is more than just a viral act — it’s a national insult.

🔍 What’s your take — Is the punishment too harsh or a necessary lesson for social media influencers?
