Tems, Okonjo-Iweala, Salah, Others Honoured as Peace Champions in Africa

Tems, Okonjo-Iweala, Salah, Others Honoured as Peace Champions in Africa

In a proud moment for the continent, Grammy-winning singer Tems, WTO Director-General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah have been named among the 2025 ‘100 Most Notable Peace Icons in Africa’, joining a diverse list of trailblazers working for progress and peace across the continent.

The announcement was made at the official ‘Unveiling News Conference’ held in Abuja on Wednesday, sparking celebration across Africa. The recognition honours individuals who have used their influence, voice, platforms, or professions to champion peace, youth empowerment, development, and community transformation.

Other notable recipients include:

  • 🇳🇬 Femi Oyetola, businessman

  • 🇹🇿 Dr. Angel Josephat Natianota, HR World Limited, Tanzania

  • 🇲🇦 Dr. Abdelhak Najib and Dr. Imane Kendili, Morocco

  • 🇿🇼 Prof. Mthuli Ncube, Zimbabwe’s Finance Minister

  • 🇷🇼 Munyakazi Sadate, CEO, Karame Rwanda Group

According to Amb. Kingsley Amafibe, Project Director of the initiative, this list celebrates Africans who are shaping the continent through humanitarian work, peace-building, education, sports, arts, and business.

A Beacon of Hope Through Diversity

From Tems’ soul-stirring lyrics that echo hope and resilience, to Okonjo-Iweala’s policy leadership on global trade equity, and Salah’s philanthropic gestures in Egypt, these honorees reflect the diversity and richness of African excellence.

This recognition proves once again that peace-building isn’t just for politicians and diplomats — it’s a role for everyone. Whether through a microphone, a boardroom, or a football pitch, Africans are writing new stories of unity, courage, and influence.

💬 Opinion: Why Celebrating Peace Icons Matters Now More Than Ever

In an era marked by conflict, disillusionment, and economic pressure, shining a light on peace-builders is not only symbolic — it’s necessary. It inspires the next generation to:

  • ✅ See value in service above self

  • ✅ Channel fame and success into positive impact

  • ✅ Prioritize unity over division

As many African nations face political transitions, youth unemployment, and social unrest, the message of peace must be amplified louder than ever. And who better to carry that message than those who already command influence and admiration?

🌍 What’s Next?

Awardees will be formally celebrated in July during the ‘100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit’ in Kigali, Rwanda. Themed ‘Leadership Frameworks for Governance, Business Growth, Investment Opportunities and Sustainable Development in Africa,’ the summit promises high-level dialogue between policymakers, business leaders, and innovators.

This is more than a recognition event — it’s a call to action for a peaceful, unified, and economically thriving Africa.

🙌 Final Word

Africa’s story isn’t just one of struggle — it’s one of strength. And with figures like Tems, Okonjo-Iweala, Salah, and many others using their gifts for the greater good, there’s hope that this generation will finally deliver the Africa we all dream of.

Congratulations to all honorees! 🌍🕊️
