Co-Parenting is a Legal Obligation, Not a Choice — May Edochie’s Lawyer Clarifies

Co-Parenting is a Legal Obligation, Not a Choice — May Edochie’s Lawyer Clarifies

In the midst of ongoing public interest in the separation between Nollywood actor Yul Edochie and his estranged wife May Edochie, their legal counsel, Emeka Ugwuonye, has offered key insight into the realities of their co-parenting arrangement — stressing that it is not a matter of emotion or opinion, but a legal duty.

Speaking via his verified Instagram page, Ugwuonye explained that co-parenting is not only a moral responsibility but a legal obligation imposed on both parents by virtue of having children together.

💬 “Yes, May and Yul have children together. They will co-parent. Why is that driving anybody crazy?”

Ugwuonye confirmed that Yul Edochie is fulfilling his role as a co-parent, providing financial support for the children’s education and maintaining unrestricted access to them. He also pointed out that effective co-parenting requires basic cooperation and communication, regardless of personal conflicts between the parents.

🗣️ “If they do not speak to each other, they cannot co-parent effectively,” he emphasized.
“Supporters on both sides don’t understand that May and Yul have no other choice — they must co-parent.”

🔍 Judy’s Position: No Legal Role in May’s Children’s Lives

Ugwuonye also addressed the involvement of Judy Austin, Yul’s second wife, clarifying that she currently holds no legal relationship with May’s children. However, he noted that if Judy and Yul were to officially marry under Nigerian law, she would become a stepmother, which might establish a limited legal connection — though not one that automatically grants co-parenting authority.

❤️‍🩹 Opinion: Emotional Tension vs Legal Realities

This statement couldn’t be more timely. In a society where public sympathy often fuels social media narratives, Ugwuonye's comments serve as a sobering reminder: personal sentiments do not override parental responsibilities.

Whether fans lean towards May or Yul, the law remains neutral — children’s welfare comes first. Co-parenting, especially after separation, demands maturity, communication, and mutual respect — not just for the sake of the law, but for the psychological and emotional wellbeing of the children involved.

📣 What’s your view on this? Should co-parenting be strictly legal or more emotionally considered too?
