“We Need a Cure for Fibroids” – Ini Dima-Okojie and Kemi Adetiba Open Up on Health Battles, Call for Medical Breakthrough
Award-winning actress Ini Dima-Okojie and celebrated filmmaker Kemi Adetiba are using their platforms to shine a spotlight on a deeply personal and often under-discussed health issue affecting millions of women — fibroids.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Ini gave an emotional update on her battle with fibroids, a condition she has openly shared with fans in the past. But this time, her message went beyond her own journey — it was a clarion call to the global medical community.
“We NEED a cure for fibroids,” she wrote.
“In the meantime, I hope every woman dealing with it is hanging in there. Just know that you are not alone.”
Her words sparked a wave of solidarity and emotional responses, including from Kemi Adetiba, the mastermind behind hit films like King of Boys.
Kemi bravely responded, revealing that she too is dealing with the same condition:
“I’ve had surgery twice for this already, and it now seems I might need a third. Sigh,” she wrote.
💔 A Shared Struggle, A Silenced Conversation
Fibroids — noncancerous growths in or around the uterus — affect up to 70-80% of women by age 50, yet the condition is often downplayed, misunderstood, or ignored in public discourse. For many Black women in particular, fibroids develop earlier, grow faster, and come with more severe symptoms.
The stories from Ini and Kemi highlight how even the strongest, most successful women are silently suffering, sometimes through multiple invasive surgeries, chronic pain, fertility challenges, and emotional exhaustion.
💬 Opinion – It’s Time to Talk (and Act)
What Ini Dima-Okojie and Kemi Adetiba have done is more than just share personal stories — they’ve opened a door for millions of women to speak up, seek help, and demand change.
Their vulnerability is a reminder that female reproductive health deserves urgent medical innovation, more research funding, and a louder voice in policy and media.
It's time the world — especially health systems across Africa — began treating fibroids not just as a women’s health issue, but as a public health priority.
