“I Bought Fake Toothpaste, Deodorant, and More” – Leo Dasilva Raises Alarm Over Counterfeit Products in Nigeria

“I Bought Fake Toothpaste, Deodorant, and More” – Leo Dasilva Raises Alarm Over Counterfeit Products in Nigeria

Reality TV star and former Big Brother Naija housemate, Leo Dasilva, has sparked a wave of public concern after revealing that he unknowingly purchased multiple counterfeit personal care and pharmaceutical products from a well-known supermarket in Abuja.

Taking to his X (formerly Twitter) page, Leo shared his frustrating experience, exposing the alarming spread of fake consumer goods in Nigeria’s capital city.

“The amount of fake drugs, fake deodorants, fake toothpaste and fake skin care in Nigeria is ridiculous,” he wrote.
“In one month, I have bought fake cod liver oil, fake Gestid, fake Sensodyne, fake Simple face wash, fake deodorant, etc.
NAFDAC needs to raid all big supermarkets in Abuja.

🧴🧼 Counterfeits That Threaten Public Health

From essential over-the-counter medications like Gestid to trusted personal care products such as Sensodyne and Simple, Leo’s account sheds light on just how deep the counterfeit crisis has become, even in supposedly reputable retail outlets.

The danger, he emphasized, is not just economic — it’s a direct threat to public health.

“These aren’t just fake labels — these are products people rely on for health and hygiene. When they’re fake, they can cause serious harm.”

🏛️ Call for Urgent Action

Leo’s tweet has gone viral, sparking responses from concerned citizens and public health advocates. Many are backing his call for the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to launch immediate inspections and clampdowns across major cities, particularly Abuja and Lagos.

Some commenters shared their own experiences, with reports of fake baby formulas, soaps, and supplements surfacing in major stores — indicating that this is not an isolated issue.

💬 Opinion – The Silent Epidemic on Store Shelves

While the Nigerian government has made strides in combatting substandard drugs and products in open markets, Leo’s experience reveals that even organized retail outlets are not immune. This points to a deeper issue within the supply chain, where unregulated distributors may be slipping fake products into legitimate storefronts.

If not addressed swiftly, the health and safety of millions of Nigerians could be at risk.

The ball is now in NAFDAC’s court — and the public is watching.
