Chelsea Boss Maresca Admits Liverpool Look “Impossible” to Catch in Title Race

Chelsea Boss Maresca Admits Liverpool Look “Impossible” to Catch in Title Race

Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has admitted it may already be “impossible” for any club to catch Liverpool in the Premier League title race this season.

After just five fixtures, Arne Slot’s men have stormed to the top with a perfect record, opening up a five-point lead. The Reds remain the only side to have won all their games so far, while Chelsea are already seven points adrift.

Maresca, who took charge at Stamford Bridge this summer, was honest in his assessment after the Blues’ latest outing.

“If they continue in this way I think it is impossible to catch them, not just for us, but for all the clubs,” the Italian admitted.

Liverpool’s intent has been clear in the transfer market, with the reigning champions splashing over £400 million on reinforcements, including Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £116m, and Alexander Isak from Newcastle for £125m on deadline day.

The Reds cruised to the title last season with four matches to spare, and early signs suggest they could dominate once again.

Opinion: Liverpool’s Relentless March and the Rest of the Pack

Liverpool’s blistering start is less about surprise and more about continuity. Under Arne Slot, they’ve combined the discipline and intensity of the Klopp era with fresh attacking depth. The result? A side that looks hungrier than ever, despite already being champions.

Enzo Maresca’s honesty is refreshing. Too often, managers cloak their concerns behind clichés, but his admission reflects reality: Liverpool are operating on a different level. With Wirtz and Isak bolstering an already star-studded squad, the Reds are not just aiming to defend their title—they’re building a dynasty.

But should the rest of the league already wave the white flag? Football has taught us that dominance can be challenged, often in unexpected ways. Injuries, dips in form, and the sheer unpredictability of the Premier League mean the race isn’t mathematically over. Still, Liverpool’s early stride feels like a warning: anyone who wants to challenge them will need more than talent—they’ll need near-perfection.

For Chelsea, seven points behind after five games is far from ideal, but Maresca’s project is still in its infancy. If anything, this gap underlines the scale of the challenge he faces in reshaping the Blues into genuine contenders.

The question now is simple: are Liverpool set to run away with it again, or will someone rise to remind us why the Premier League is the most unpredictable league in the world?
