Real Madrid Sack Xabi Alonso After Supercopa Defeat to Barcelona

Real Madrid Sack Xabi Alonso After Supercopa Defeat to Barcelona

Real Madrid have officially parted ways with head coach Xabi Alonso following their 3–2 defeat to Barcelona in the Supercopa final, a decision taken less than 24 hours after the Clasico loss.

The LaLiga giants confirmed the development in a club statement, revealing that the decision was reached by mutual agreement.
“Real Madrid CF announces that, by mutual agreement between the club and Xabi Alonso, it has been decided to end his time as first team coach,” the statement read.
“Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.”

The club also expressed gratitude to Alonso and his technical crew for their efforts, wishing them success in the next phase of their careers.

Alonso’s dismissal comes amid mounting pressure over Real Madrid’s inconsistent performances this season. Beyond the Supercopa disappointment, Los Blancos have struggled to find stability in both LaLiga and the UEFA Champions League, raising concerns about direction and identity under the former midfielder. Alonso also attracted criticism after describing the Supercopa as “the least important” competition Madrid would play in — comments that reportedly did not sit well with the club hierarchy.

The timing of the decision is particularly striking, with Madrid set to face Albacete in a Copa del Rey Round of 16 clash in just two days, leaving the club scrambling for immediate solutions.

From an observer’s perspective, this move reflects Real Madrid’s unforgiving culture — one where history and sentiment rarely outweigh results. While Alonso remains a club legend, coaching at the Bernabéu is a different battlefield altogether. The sacking suggests that the club’s patience ran out amid fears that the season could slip further out of control.

However, the decision also raises questions. Was Alonso truly given enough time to implement his ideas at a club known for constant pressure and instant success? Or is this another example of Madrid’s high-risk, high-expectation approach to management?

As Real Madrid prepare for their next fixture, attention now shifts to who takes charge next — and whether the change will spark the response the club desperately seeks. For Alonso, the exit may be painful, but his reputation remains intact, and many believe this experience will only sharpen him for future challenges at the top level of European football.
