AFCON 2025: Mozambique Captain Unfazed by Super Eagles’ Reputation
Mozambique captain Elias Domingues Pelembe has insisted that his side will not be overawed by Nigeria’s reputation ahead of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash on Monday.
The Mambas head into the knockout encounter as clear underdogs against the three-time champions, whose rich AFCON history and star-studded squad place them among the favourites for the title. Mozambique’s task is further complicated by their poor head-to-head record against Nigeria, having drawn once and lost four times in five previous meetings.
However, speaking ahead of the game, Pelembe struck a confident tone, admitting Nigeria’s quality but stressing that his team believes in the unpredictability of football.
“The Nigerian team is very powerful, but we will not be intimidated by that. We want to go there and compete because football is 90 minutes — anything can happen,” he said.
Mozambique’s confidence is boosted by a historic milestone at the tournament, having secured their first-ever AFCON victory during the group stage with a memorable win over Gabon.
Opinion: Pelembe’s comments reflect the mindset of a team with nothing to lose — often the most dangerous type of opponent in knockout football. While Nigeria’s superiority on paper is undeniable, AFCON has repeatedly shown that pedigree alone does not guarantee progress.
Mozambique may lack the depth and individual brilliance of the Super Eagles, but their belief, fearlessness, and recent breakthrough victory could fuel an upset if Nigeria drop their guard. The Mambas’ willingness to embrace the underdog role could make them stubborn and difficult to break down.
For Nigeria, this is the kind of fixture that demands full concentration rather than confidence built on history. Mozambique’s message is clear: they respect the Super Eagles, but they do not fear them. Whether that bravery turns into a famous shock or ends in heartbreak will be decided over 90 intense minutes.
