AFCON 2025: Mozambique’s Kambala Backs Mambas to Shock Super Eagles
Mozambique midfielder Manuel Kambala has expressed strong confidence that the Mambas can pull off a surprise victory over Nigeria when both sides meet in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite recording just one win in three group-stage matches, Mozambique secured one of the best third-placed slots to book their place in the knockout phase. They finished third in Group C behind Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon, showing enough resilience to stay alive in the competition.
Nigeria, on the other hand, have been one of the standout teams of the tournament. Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles won all three of their group matches in convincing fashion and currently boast the highest goal tally at AFCON 2025 with eight goals scored.
Speaking ahead of the clash, Kambala admitted Nigeria’s quality but insisted Mozambique are not intimidated.
“I clearly believe we will advance with the team we have. We have already shown on the field that we are not just here to participate. We know it will not be an easy game,” he said.
Historically, the odds are stacked against the Mambas. Mozambique have lost four and drawn one of their five previous meetings with Nigeria, including their only AFCON encounter at the 2010 tournament, which the Super Eagles won.
Opinion: While confidence is essential in tournament football, Mozambique’s optimism will be tested against a Nigerian side brimming with momentum, goals, and belief. However, AFCON has a long history of shocks, and knockout football often ignores form and reputation. If Mozambique can stay disciplined and exploit any defensive lapses, they could make the contest uncomfortable. For Nigeria, this is a reminder that dominance in the group stage guarantees nothing—focus and composure will be key to avoiding an upset.
