AFCON 2025: Dylan Kerr Predicts Tough Test for Super Eagles Against Mozambique
Former Leeds United defender Dylan Kerr has warned that Nigeria’s clash with Mozambique in the Round of 16 at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) could be far more difficult than many expect.
Despite the Super Eagles’ impressive historical record against the Mambas — winning four of their five previous meetings, including a 3-0 victory in their only AFCON encounter in 2010 — Kerr believes past results may count for little when the knockout stage begins.
Speaking to Flashscore, Kerr described the tie as unpredictable, stressing that Mozambique have shown enough quality and resilience to cause problems.
“You never know what can happen. It’ll be a tough game and can go either way.
I fancy Mozambique to put up a good game against Nigeria,” he said.
The match is scheduled to kick off at 8 pm Nigerian time on Monday, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.
Opinion: Kerr’s assessment echoes a familiar warning that Nigerian fans have heard — and sometimes ignored — in previous tournaments. While the Super Eagles boast pedigree, form, and a flawless group-stage record, AFCON knockout matches have a long history of defying logic and reputation.
Mozambique may not carry Nigeria’s star power, but they have already shown fearlessness and attacking intent in the tournament. Their willingness to play without intimidation could make them dangerous, especially if Nigeria start slowly or underestimate the task.
That said, the Super Eagles appear better prepared this time around. Eric Chelle’s side has shown balance, discipline, and a growing tactical identity — qualities that were missing in past painful exits. If Nigeria approach the game with the seriousness it deserves, their quality should tell.
Still, as Kerr rightly notes, AFCON rarely follows the script. For Nigeria, the challenge is clear: respect Mozambique, manage the pressure, and let performance — not history — do the talking.
