NNL Approves Lobi Stars’ Return to McCarthy Stadium as Makurdi Set for Second Stanza Action

NNL Approves Lobi Stars’ Return to McCarthy Stadium as Makurdi Set for Second Stanza Action

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has granted Lobi Stars provisional approval to return to the McCarthy Stadium in Makurdi for the second stanza of the season, marking a significant boost for the club and its supporters.

Lobi Stars had earlier adopted the Lafia City Stadium as their temporary home ground during the first phase of the campaign after concerns were raised about facilities at the Makurdi venue. However, following recent inspections, NNL Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana confirmed that the stadium now meets the league’s minimum operational standards.

According to Alanana, the league body was satisfied with the improvements made by the club and local authorities. He recalled that the McCarthy Stadium was initially considered for the season’s opening match but was rejected at the time due to inadequate basic facilities. With recent upgrades now in place, the NNL believes the venue is fit — at least provisionally — to host league fixtures.

Despite the approval, the league has issued a clear warning that the permission remains conditional. The NNL emphasized that the right to use the stadium could be withdrawn if the required standards are not consistently maintained throughout the season.

Lobi Stars are expected to make their return to Makurdi this weekend when they host Doma United, a fixture that many local fans are eagerly anticipating as football action finally returns to their home city.

An Opinion Worth Noting

Beyond the official announcement, Lobi Stars’ return to McCarthy Stadium highlights a larger conversation about infrastructure development in Nigerian football. Playing in front of home supporters often provides teams with a psychological advantage, and the move back to Makurdi could inject fresh energy into the squad’s performance during the crucial second stanza.

However, the league’s decision to grant only provisional approval also serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining professional standards in domestic competitions. Improved facilities not only enhance player safety but also elevate the overall image of Nigerian football, making it more attractive to sponsors and fans alike.

For many supporters, the return to Makurdi feels like a homecoming — but sustaining that privilege will depend on continued commitment to quality and organization. If Lobi Stars and the stadium management can maintain these standards, the move could become a positive example of how clubs and league authorities can work together to raise the bar for football in Nigeria.
