Abuja Music Community Mourns Nanyah as Family Announces Funeral Plans

Abuja Music Community Mourns Nanyah as Family Announces Funeral Plans

The family of late singer Ifunanya Nwangene, popularly known as Nanyah, has shared details of her funeral arrangements following her tragic death from a snakebite at her Abuja residence on January 31, 2026. Despite being rushed to the hospital, the talented singer sadly did not survive, sparking widespread grief across Nigeria’s music community.

Her brother, Kingsley Nwangene, confirmed the plans via Instagram, posting her obituary alongside a heartfelt tribute: “Till I see you again.” According to the family’s statement, a service of songs will be held on February 10 at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Abule Oshun, Dansa, Lagos, starting at 4 p.m., followed by a requiem mass at 6 p.m. She will be laid to rest in her hometown in Enugu State on February 14, 2026, with a thanksgiving service celebrating her life scheduled for February 15.

In a touching show of solidarity, the Abuja Metropolitan Music Society Choir held a tribute concert for Nanyah at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton, Abuja. The programme, titled “Tribute and Songs,” honoured her significant contribution to the capital’s classical and contemporary music scene. Choir members noted that her remains have already been transported to Enugu State, where her father resides, describing her death as a profound loss for Abuja’s growing music community.

Opinion:
Nanyah’s sudden passing is a stark reminder of how fragile life can be, even for those whose talents touch so many. The outpouring of support from fellow musicians and fans highlights the deep mark she left on Nigeria’s music scene. Beyond mourning, the tribute concert and planned services offer an important opportunity to celebrate her artistry and legacy, showing that while her life was cut short, her influence and music will continue to inspire future generations.

Her story also underscores the importance of community in times of grief, as fellow artists and fans rally to honour her memory — a testament to the unifying power of music in Nigeria.
