Grace Makun Criticizes Modern Children’s Party Packs: “What Happened to Toys?”

Grace Makun has voiced her concern over the changing contents of children’s birthday party packs in Nigeria, noting that many parents now include food items instead of traditional toys.

In a social media post, Makun, who is married to celebrity fashion designer Yomi Casual, lamented that party packs increasingly resemble charity distributions rather than celebratory gifts. She highlighted that while earlier packs often contained toys, educational resources, and simple treats, many modern packs now feature items like noodles, rice, sugar, Milo, Maggi, and cereal.

“Party packs be looking like a charity project. What happened to toys? Educational resources, simple treats and so on?” she questioned, adding that she feels out of touch with the latest trends.

Opinion: The Value of Play Over Practicality

Makun’s critique raises a broader conversation about the purpose of birthday party packs. While food items may provide practical value, toys and educational gifts encourage creativity, play, and social bonding among children. Replacing toys with groceries may reflect economic pressures or changing parental priorities, but it risks losing the joy and excitement that birthdays traditionally bring.

It’s worth considering that party packs serve not just as handouts but as tools to inspire imagination and celebration. Striking a balance—perhaps combining fun toys with useful items—could preserve the festive spirit while still being practical.

As Nigerian parents navigate evolving expectations, Makun’s perspective reminds us that celebration and childhood fun should remain at the heart of birthday traditions.
