Blessing Akinlosotu Urges NCC and NBC to Regulate Social Media Amid Feud Involving Seyi Tinubu, VeryDarkMan, and King Mitchy

Blessing Akinlosotu Urges NCC and NBC to Regulate Social Media Amid Feud Involving Seyi Tinubu, VeryDarkMan, and King Mitchy

Public affairs analyst and activist Blessing Akinlosotu has called on the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) to intensify monitoring of social media content creators following a high-profile controversy involving President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi Tinubu, social commentator Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), and content creator Mitchel Mukoro, known as King Mitchy.

In a statement released on Tuesday, Akinlosotu condemned the escalating feud, which began when VeryDarkMan alleged that Seyi Tinubu and King Mitchy threatened his life over remarks he made regarding a N100 million donation. Seyi Tinubu denied the claims in a detailed statement over the weekend. The conflict took a darker turn after reports suggested that King Mitchy attempted to take her own life.

Reacting to the situation, Akinlosotu said it was unnecessary for VDM to involve Seyi Tinubu and strongly condemned any attempt at self-harm.

“I call on the Nigeria Communication Commission, the Nigerian Broadcasting Commission, and other regulatory agencies to start paying closer and more serious attention to content being generated and churned out on a daily basis by creators across the federation through media,” she said. “There must be strong sanctions, and some persons must be made scapegoats as a way of deterrence.”

Opinion: The Need for Balanced Regulation

Akinlosotu’s call highlights a growing concern in Nigeria: the unchecked influence of social media content creators. While freedom of expression is fundamental, the potential for misinformation, harassment, and threats of violence has real-life consequences. The VDM–Seyi Tinubu–King Mitchy controversy illustrates how online disputes can quickly escalate into public scandals, sometimes endangering mental health and personal safety.

However, regulating content must be done carefully. Heavy-handed approaches could stifle legitimate discourse and artistic expression. The challenge lies in finding a balance — protecting individuals from harassment while ensuring social media remains a platform for healthy debate and civic engagement.

Ultimately, this incident serves as a reminder that social media, when unmonitored, can amplify conflicts. Encouraging responsible content creation, paired with proportionate oversight, could prevent future controversies from spiraling out of control.
