Antoine Semenyo Says Choosing Ghana Over England, France Was ‘Easy’ Decision

Manchester City forward Antoine Semenyo has revealed that committing his international future to Ghana was a straightforward decision, despite having eligibility to represent England and France.

The 26-year-old attacker explained that when the opportunity to play for the Black Stars came, he did not hesitate to accept it. Speaking on The Mixer podcast, Semenyo noted that the chance to represent a senior national team early in his career played a key role in his choice.

“I was 20, 21 when Ghana came calling. I couldn’t say no to playing for the first team, so it was an easy choice,” he said.

Semenyo officially declared for Ghana national football team in 2022, adding that he never seriously considered switching allegiance, especially as he was not among the top-ranked options for England at the time.

Opinion: Loyalty, Opportunity, or Pragmatism?

Semenyo’s decision highlights a recurring theme in international football—players often have to balance emotional ties with career opportunities. While some fans may frame such choices as purely patriotic, the reality is usually more complex.

In Semenyo’s case, the decision appears rooted in timing and opportunity. Ghana offered him a clear pathway to international football, something that might have taken longer—or never materialized—with England or France. For many players, especially those still building their careers, that kind of certainty is hard to ignore.

There’s also a broader implication for African football. When players like Semenyo commit early and fully, it strengthens national teams and builds continuity. However, it also raises ongoing questions about how countries like England manage dual-nationality talents and whether some prospects slip through the cracks.

Ultimately, Semenyo’s honesty is refreshing. Rather than dressing his decision in clichés, he acknowledged the practical reality behind it—and in modern football, that realism is becoming the norm rather than the exception.
