GehGeh Breaks Silence on Family Neglect Claims, Defends Financial Boundaries

GehGeh Breaks Silence on Family Neglect Claims, Defends Financial Boundaries

Emmanuel Obruste, popularly known as GehGeh, has responded to allegations of neglect made by his younger sister, sparking fresh debate on social media about family responsibility and financial limits.

The controversy began after his sister accused him of abandoning his siblings despite his perceived wealth, even claiming she was turned away from his housewarming ceremony. The claims quickly gained traction online, with many Nigerians criticising the influencer.

Addressing the backlash in a video shared on his Instagram page, GehGeh pushed back against the narrative, stating that his financial capacity has been overstated. According to him, he has supported his family in several ways in the past—including providing his sister with the phone she currently uses—but insists he cannot shoulder the burden of lifting his entire family out of poverty.

“I can only do my best, not my all,” he said, emphasizing that he is the first in his family to achieve financial success and must be strategic to sustain it. He urged his siblings to seek employment and avoid total dependence on him, noting that he also has his own immediate family to cater for.

GehGeh further explained that his approach to money—though perceived as “wickedness”—is what enabled him to reach his current level, arguing that excessive generosity could jeopardize his own stability.

Opinion: Between Responsibility and Reality

GehGeh’s comments strike a nerve because they touch on a common but often unspoken struggle—what happens when one person “makes it” in a financially struggling family.

On one hand, his stance may sound harsh. In many cultures, especially in Nigeria, success is rarely seen as individual; it’s expected to uplift the entire family. That expectation can make his words feel cold or even dismissive.

But there’s another side that’s harder to ignore. Financial success, especially in its early stages, is often fragile. The pressure to solve generational poverty overnight can overwhelm even the most well-meaning person. GehGeh’s argument about sustainability—choosing strategy over emotion—reflects a reality many young earners quietly face.

The real issue here might not be whether he should help, but how much help is realistic without self-destruction. Support without boundaries can lead to burnout, while strict boundaries can create resentment.

In the end, this situation highlights a deeper conversation: breaking out of poverty is one battle, but managing expectations afterward can be an even tougher one.
