Southampton Troll Arsenal After FA Cup Upset as Arteta Urges Reality Check

Southampton added a touch of social media spice to their FA Cup triumph after knocking out Arsenal with a 2-1 victory at St Mary’s Stadium on Saturday.

The Championship side stunned Mikel Arteta’s men with a disciplined and clinical performance. Ross Stewart opened the scoring in the 35th minute after capitalising on a costly misjudgment by Ben White, calmly controlling the ball before slotting it past goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

Arsenal responded in the second half through Viktor Gyokeres, who came off the bench to equalise in the 68th minute and inject fresh energy into the visitors’ attack.

Despite mounting pressure from the Premier League leaders, it was Shea Charles who delivered the decisive blow, scoring in the 85th minute to seal a memorable victory for Southampton.

The result sparked reactions online, with one Arsenal fan dismissing the outcome as a “fluke win.” Southampton’s official account quickly fired back with a cheeky response: “Enjoy your quadruple, pal.”

The defeat marks Arsenal’s second consecutive loss, following their setback against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final last month.

Speaking after the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta refused to make excuses, calling for accountability within his squad.

“Let’s look at ourselves in the mirror, accept the situation, and move forward,” he said.

Despite the disappointment, Arsenal remain firmly in contention for the Premier League title and are still competing in the UEFA Champions League.

Opinion: Banter Aside, Arsenal’s Warning Signs Are Real

Southampton’s social media jab may have grabbed headlines, but the bigger story lies in Arsenal’s performance—and growing concerns.

Losing to a lower-division side in the FA Cup is always painful, but doing so while chasing major honours raises serious questions. This isn’t just about one game; it’s about a pattern. Two consecutive defeats suggest a dip in momentum at a critical stage of the season.

Arteta’s response is telling. Instead of blaming injuries or circumstances, he’s demanding self-reflection—and rightly so. Top teams are defined not by how they perform when everything is going well, but by how they respond when things start to slip.

Southampton, on the other hand, deserve full credit. This wasn’t luck—it was discipline, execution, and belief. Their ability to take chances and stay organised under pressure is exactly what cup football is about.

As for the social media banter, it adds flavour to the game, but Arsenal cannot afford to focus on that. Their priorities lie elsewhere: staying consistent in the league and delivering in Europe.

Because while jokes fade quickly, results don’t—and Arsenal’s recent ones are starting to demand serious attention.
