Premier League Explains VAR Decision as West Ham Goal Against Arsenal Is Disallowed in Late Drama

Premier League Explains VAR Decision as West Ham Goal Against Arsenal Is Disallowed in Late Drama

Premier League has clarified the decision behind the disallowance of Callum Wilson’s late equaliser for West Ham United in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

The incident occurred in stoppage time at the London Stadium, shortly after Leandro Trossard had given Arsenal the lead. West Ham thought they had snatched a dramatic equaliser when Wilson bundled the ball into the net, sparking celebrations from the home fans.

Although the goal was initially awarded on the pitch, the referee was instructed by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After the review, the decision was overturned due to a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya in the build-up.

A statement from the Premier League Match Centre on X read:

“#WHUARS – 90+5’ VAR OVERTURN. After VAR review, the referee overturned the original decision of goal to West Ham United. Referee announcement: ‘After review, West Ham number 19 commits a foul on the goalkeeper. Final decision is direct free kick.’”

The decision ensured Arsenal held on for a crucial victory that moved them five points clear of Manchester City in the title race with just two games remaining.

Opinion: VAR Remains the Decider—But Not Everyone Will Agree

Once again, the spotlight falls on VAR in a decisive moment involving Premier League action. While the explanation points to a foul on David Raya, such marginal calls continue to divide fans and pundits.

For Arsenal, the decision is massive in their title push, but for West Ham United, it will feel like another harsh moment where fine margins went against them.

The issue is not necessarily whether the call was correct, but how long it took and how subjective such “foul on the goalkeeper” interpretations remain in modern football.

As title races tighten and pressure increases, VAR decisions like this don’t just influence matches—they shape entire seasons.
