Ilebaye’s Father Breaks Silence on Alleged Assault, Says ‘I Only Wanted to Correct My Daughter’

Ilebaye’s Father Breaks Silence on Alleged Assault, Says ‘I Only Wanted to Correct My Daughter’

Mr. Odinia Emmanuel Godson, father of former Big Brother Naija winner Ilebaye Odiniya, has publicly addressed the controversy surrounding the alleged assault incident involving his daughter.

In a viral confession video shared online, Mr. Godson stated that his actions did not stem from hatred toward Ilebaye, insisting that she remains one of his most cherished children.

“I am Odinia Emmanuel Godson, the father of Ilebaye Odiniya,” he said in the video.

“I want to put the record straight that what led to that was not that I don’t love my daughter. She was one of my best children.”

He went on to explain that he supported Ilebaye’s journey into the Big Brother Naija reality show, including contributing heavily to her voting campaign during her successful 2023 appearance.

According to him, he expected a stronger relationship with his daughter after her rise to fame, but became concerned when she allegedly stopped listening to family guidance.

“For instance, where I come from, if you have a child, you can’t wait until the child spoils to a certain level before you can correct him or her,” he said.

The development comes days after Ilebaye appeared emotional during an Instagram livestream where she cried for help while visibly distressed. A trending clip from the livestream allegedly showed a man believed to be her father physically confronting her in the background.

The incident sparked widespread outrage online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over domestic violence and family conflict.

Opinion: Love Should Never Become Violence

The emotional reaction surrounding this incident shows how deeply Nigerians care about family, respect, and accountability. However, it also highlights an important truth: parental correction and physical violence are not the same thing.

Mr. Godson’s explanation reflects a mindset still common in many African homes — the belief that strict discipline is sometimes necessary when a child becomes “difficult” or independent. But society is increasingly questioning where discipline ends and abuse begins.

What makes this situation especially sensitive is that it played out publicly. Millions watched a young woman visibly distressed during a livestream, and that naturally triggered strong emotions online.

At the same time, the father’s statement also reveals another side of the issue: the struggle some parents face when fame, adulthood, and changing lifestyles create distance within families. Many parents feel ignored once their children become financially successful or publicly influential.

Still, frustration can never justify physical confrontation.

The bigger conversation here should not only be about blame, but about healthier communication within families. Fame can change dynamics at home, but respect must remain mutual — from parents to children and from children to parents.

For many observers, the hope now is not more public drama, but healing, accountability, and genuine reconciliation between father and daughter.
