FCT Police Arrest Ilebaye’s Father Over Alleged Domestic Violence After Viral Livestream Distress Call
Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory have arrested Emmanuel Odiniya, father of former Big Brother Naija housemate Ilebaye Odiniya, over allegations of domestic violence.
The incident reportedly came to public attention after Ilebaye went live on Instagram on Friday night, crying out for help while allegedly being assaulted in real time. A viral video clip from the livestream sparked widespread concern across social media.
According to the spokesperson of the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, officers responded swiftly to a distress call from Royal Anchor Estate in Wuye, Abuja.
“At about 12:00 a.m., the FCT Police Command responded to a distress call… reporting an ongoing physical assault on Ms. Ilebaye Odiniya Emmanuel by her father, Hon. Emmanuel Odiniya,” the statement said.
Police operatives forced entry into the residence after gaining access around 2:30 a.m., where they found Ilebaye with visible bruises. She was rescued alongside her siblings and taken to NNPC Hospital, Abuja for medical attention.
The statement further confirmed that Emmanuel Odiniya is currently in police custody as investigations continue.
Opinion: This Case Highlights the Hidden Reality of Domestic Violence Behind Closed Doors
The arrest of Emmanuel Odiniya involving Ilebaye Odiniya is a deeply troubling reminder that domestic violence is not limited to strangers or external environments—it can occur within families and private homes, often unnoticed until it escalates publicly.
What makes this case particularly disturbing is the fact that the distress signal came through a live broadcast, meaning the incident unfolded in real time before an audience that could do little beyond reacting online.
The swift response from the Nigeria Police Force in the Federal Capital Territory is commendable, especially given the urgency and sensitivity of the situation.
However, the broader issue remains: many victims of domestic abuse never get the chance—or courage—to go live or call for help. Their experiences remain hidden behind closed doors.
This incident should therefore not only be treated as a celebrity-related story but as a call for stronger awareness, intervention systems, and accessible reporting channels for domestic violence cases in Nigeria.
If anything, it reinforces an uncomfortable truth: abuse can exist anywhere, even in families the public assumes are stable.
