AIK Block Zadok Yohanna from Joining Super Eagles for Unity Cup
AIK Fotboll have prevented youngster Zadok Yohanna from joining the Nigeria national football team for the upcoming Unity Cup tournament in London.
The 18-year-old winger was recently included in Nigeria’s squad by head coach Éric Chelle as one of several new faces selected for the international friendly competition.
However, AIK confirmed that the player will remain with the club as he continues recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during a league match two weeks ago.
According to the Swedish side, the decision was taken for both sporting and medical reasons, with the club prioritizing the youngster’s health and rehabilitation process.
Despite his age, Zadok has enjoyed an impressive campaign so far, contributing two goals and three assists in seven league appearances for AIK this season.
Opinion
AIK’s decision may disappoint Nigerian fans eager to see a promising young talent in Super Eagles colours, but it is ultimately understandable. Young players recovering from muscle injuries require careful management, especially at a crucial stage of their development.
For Nigeria, the bigger positive is that Zadok is already attracting attention at senior international level at just 18 years old. His performances in Sweden suggest he could become an important player for the Super Eagles in the future if his progress continues.
The situation also highlights the growing challenge national teams face with clubs becoming more protective of young talents, particularly when injuries are involved. Balancing player welfare with international ambitions remains one of modern football’s biggest tensions.
