Carrick Makes Premier League History as Manchester United Beat Liverpool in Old Trafford Thriller
Michael Carrick has written his name into Premier League history after guiding Manchester United to a dramatic 3–2 victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The interim manager watched his side deliver another strong home performance, with goals from Matheus Cunha, Kobbie Mainoo, and Benjamin Šeško securing all three points against Arne Slot’s Liverpool team.
According to OptaJoe, Carrick has now become the first English manager and only the sixth manager overall to win at least eight of his first nine Premier League home games. He is also the first manager since Antonio Conte in the 2016–17 season to achieve such a record, matching an 8 wins from 9 home games milestone.
Carrick was appointed on an interim basis following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim earlier this year, and has since overseen a strong turnaround in home form.
Opinion: Carrick Is Building Something—But the Real Test Is Away From Home
There’s no denying it—Michael Carrick is quietly doing something impressive.
Beating Liverpool and maintaining one of the best home records in the league puts him in rare company. More importantly, it suggests structure, discipline, and a clear sense of control at Old Trafford—something fans have been demanding for a while.
However, context matters. Many managers have historically built strong home records at Manchester United, only to struggle with consistency across a full season. The real question is whether Carrick’s system can travel—whether it can survive the pressure of away fixtures, injuries, and tactical adaptations from opponents.
There’s also the bigger issue of timing. As an interim manager, Carrick is essentially proving himself without full authority over long-term planning. That makes his achievements even more notable—but also more uncertain.
For now, though, United fans have something they’ve lacked for a while: stability at home and belief in the touchline. Whether that grows into something permanent will depend on what happens after the headlines fade.
